SCHIZOPHRENIA A MEDICAL MYSTERY pt1

Schizophrenia, a condition which receives a lot of heat and criticism, some it earned while a lot of it is based on ignorance and fear. Imagine a giy walking across the street towards you talking to himself, and he is very dirty and flies are in his long unkept beard. He is singing or pehaps having a phliosophical discussion about the nature of reality within himself. Your first instinct is to run away, because this guy is clearly dangerous and he probably will attack you. Will he? What do you think of when someone speaks of mental illness? It is probably some homeless guy in tethered clothes sitting on the street corner or a park bench having an in depth conversation with people who are not there, or perhaps, an image of a person strapped in a straight jacket getting pulled away by orderlies in white coats. With either image conceived of in your mind, you will either get slightly creeped out or perhaps wither in fear. This is the image of a mentally ill person in America and most parts of the world. Have you ever considered that perhaps the person sitting next you in your office or the person standing in line in front of you at a cafe have mental illness issues? I mean, they get up, go to work, and spend time with their families just like you so everything has to be okay, right? That is not so.
